One of my favorite aspects of Madison is it’s transition from secluded wooded backroads to some of the most beautiful beaches on the Shoreline, making it the perfect place for a scenic bike ride. Stop downtown for supplies and then explore the many beautiful spots to enjoy a picnic, the beach or just a good book in the shade.

Did you know that The Homestead Bed & Breakfast in Madison has their own beach cruisers with the cutest woven Nantucket baskets? If you’re staying there, don’t miss the opportunity to explore Madison on one. Grab one of theirs, or bring your own, and let’s hit the road.

START AT THE HOMESTEAD BED & BREAKFAST

The Homestead
391 Boston Post Road

Turn left to head into town (1.1 miles).

You’ll need a few supplies before heading out on your ride, so let us help you with your shopping list.

Coffee:
Madison Coffee House, 724 Boston Post Road
Starting early? Then make sure and stop by Madison Coffee House. It’s one of the newest additions to Madison’s downtown and the crowd only confirms it’s not to be skipped.

Cheese: Madison Cheese Shop, 119 Samson Rock Drive
Want an instant picnic? Pick up one of Madison Cheese Shop’s Monger’s Choice Cheese Plates. Let them know how many people and three cheeses you love and they’ll provide the rest with condiments, bread, and crackers.

Wine: The Wine Thief, 30 Wall Street
Did you know that alcohol gets the thumbs up at the Surf Club? Yep, so you can take in the beach, a sunset over the Long Island Sound, all while enjoying your favorite glass of rose.

Beach Read: R.J. Julia Booksellers, 768 Boston Post Road
A day at the beach is not complete without a great read. Stop by the famous R.J. Julia Booksellers for the perfect book. Before you leave take a peek at their events calendar, you never know which author will be in town next.

Deli Sandwiches: Bradley and Wall Gourmet Foods, 96 Wall Street
Bradley and Wall has it all. Pick up sandwiches, soups, salads, chips, drinks and even dessert. Want to carb load before a long ride, don’t miss their penne alla vodka.

Tea Time: Savvy Tea, 121 Samson Rock Drive
You won’t find better tea, anywhere. On a cold ride, warm up with a mug of their finest steeped tea leaves, or on a hot day cool down with a delicious ice tea, or my favorite, their matcha tea smoothie!

Forget the bike ride, and just grab cocktails: Moxie, 52 Wall Street
Rather just chill? I hear you. Stop by Moxie for some of the best cocktails on the Shoreline. You’ll find an easy atmosphere where family and friends gather and relax in a warm and casual setting, serving New American comfort food.

WHERE TO GO

Madison Surf Club, Surf Club Road (4.5 miles)
The Madison Surf Club offers one of the best beaches on the Shoreline, picnic benches, barbecues, the perfect kids playground for any age, and its own cafe serving some seriously good seafood. In addition, the Surf Club gets the thumbs up when it comes to enjoying a glass of wine or a cold beer. So sip and take in the views.

Madison Town Green, Meeting House Lane (0.4 miles)
Just down the street from Madison’s Downtown, enjoy the beautiful greenspace with First Congregational Church of Madison in the background. Often you’ll come across Madison’s weekly farmer’s market on Fridays, special events, or live music.

East Wharf Beach, 122 Middle Beach Road (0.9 miles)
This is my favorite beach in all of Madison. It’s quiet, quaint and the perfect destination to dip your toes or enjoy a picnic.

Hammonnasset Beach State Park, 1288 Boston Post Road (2.9 miles)
CT’s largest beachside state park offers visitors two-miles of beaches for swimming, seasonal camping, picnicking, saltwater fishing, and hiking. Did you know you can rent bicycles there through Labor Day?
